Netflix’s ‘The Perfect Neighbour’: What happened with Susan Lorincz and where is she currently?

The Perfect Neighbour- a new true crime documentary is a Netflix release that has come with a case of horror behind the entertainment. The Perfect Neighbour is a new feature film that is based on a terrifying murder case in Florida.

The Perfect Neighbour, which was released on October 17, can be seen as a re-examination by Netflix of the murder of Florida Ajke “AJ” Owens – a case that unveiled decades of tension in the neighbourhood and racial hatred. In 2023, mother of four Ajke “AJ” Owens was killed by her neighbour, Susan Lorinc, in Ocala.

Ajke AJ Shantrell Owens died at the tender age of 35 years before the eyes of her children. She is an unmarried mother of four shot in the front door of the house of her neighbour in Ocala, Florida, on June 2, 2023, by a bullet shot through the window by 58-year-old insurance agent Susan Lorincz.

Ajike AJ Shantrell Owens did not live to see her 35th birthday because her life was taken right in front of the eyes of her children. The single mother of four was shot through the front door of the home of her neighbour in Ocala, Florida, on June 2, 2023, by 58-year-old insurance agent Susan Lorincz.

Netflix teases: “She would call 911, hurl racial slurs and make threats- all over children playing. A devastating crime unfolds through years of police bodycam footage.”

The documentary dwells on a feud that has simmered over the years amongst neighbours. Some of the residents claimed that Lorincz would turn aggressive towards the children of Owens playing outside, to the point of using racial slurs. Owens also visited Lorincz on the day of the shooting to resolve some previous conflict. In the process, Lorincz shot through the door and killed Owens.

Lorincz was accused of manslaughter with a gun, culpable negligence, battery, and two counts of assault after her arrest. In November 2024, she received 25 years in prison. She is presently serving her punishment in Homestead Correctional Institution, Homestead, Florida.

Lorincz, who was in her house when she opened fire using her handgun, was reported to have hit the single mum of four in the chest by the BBC. Although she did not testify in her trial, she once told the media that she had been afraid of her life when Owens appeared at the door.

At the time, the BBC relayed that Lorincz denied the shooting was racial, saying: “I am so sorry that I took AJ’s life. I never intended to kill her.

“The night I shot that gun, I was confused as to why she was screaming and pounding on my door. Please accept my humble and sincere apology for this tragedy.”
