George R.R. Martin announces the official confirmation of a Game of Thrones sequel series along with several projects in development

George R.R. Martin left some thrilling news. HBO is officially developing the Game of Thrones sequel series. The author affirmed this during Noir (e.p.) in Iceland on November 15, 2025. Outside of the prequel series, such as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, there are several follow-up series in development.

George R.R. Martin announced it at Iceland Noir, a fantasy convention between November 12-15. His comments were captured in the Spanish finite Los Siete Reinos. According to Martin, there are other Game of Thrones spinoff projects at work besides A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon.

Martin affirmed that most of them are prequels, but more crucially, there exist some sequels. He observed that he is collaborating with other producers. The current House of the Dragon prequel and the upcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms can only be considered as a fraction of the franchise’s growth.

Martin stated, “Aside from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and House of the Dragon, there are other Game of Thrones spinoff projects in development. Most are prequels. There are several in development, five or six series, and I’m not developing them alone. I’m working with other people. Yes, there are some sequels.”

This marks a major shift. The sequel Job Snow project has seemingly been frozen as early as April 2024. But the remarks of Martin indicate that other concepts of sequels are under development. Sequels could always be done, but never publicly.

The Game of Thrones Universe has been charted up to 2028 by HBO. Starting January 18, 2026, the fans will receive A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, including a prequel set with Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg. The first season of the show consists of 6 episodes.

House of the Dragon Season 3 comes in summer 2026. HBO has already renewed that series for Season 4 in 2028. Thus, there are obvious long-term commitments to the prequel shows.

There are also several other projects that were confirmed by Martin on top of those that have been greenlit. The franchise is growing at a rapid pace. HBO desires Western content all the time.

The only evident thing is that sequels entail established characters or the world following the closure of the initial series. This is quite the opposite of prequels such as House of the Dragon, which dwell upon the history of Westeros. Sequels imply a venture into unexplored realms of the books.

Right now, details are scarce. Martin and HBO do not disclose any particular projects or dates, or releases. However, the very fact that it was announced means that the future of Westeros is finally receiving its own shows.
