The Liverpool club announced on Tuesday that Mohamed Salah will leave the club at the end of the season after a span of nine years in which he has become one of their best players.
Salah, 33, has signed a deal to quit the team a year earlier than his contract was to expire, Liverpool claimed.
According to sources reported by ESPN, this will mean Salah would be free to leave on a free transfer.
Liverpool, in a statement, said, “Mohamed Salah will end his brilliant career with the Liverpool Football Club by the end of the 2025-26 season. The forward has come to terms with the Reds that will end a superb nine-year stay at Anfield.
Salah said he wanted to announce this to the supporters at the earliest opportunity possible to give them transparency on his future, as he valued and owed them.
His 255 goals in 435 games made him the third-highest goalscorer in Liverpool history, just behind Ian Rush (346) and Roger Hunt (285), and the 191 goals he has scored in his top-level career place him fourth among the top all-time scorers in the English-language football game.
Salah, who joined Liverpool in 2017 and joined it since 2017, has helped the club to win eight major titles, two of them being the Premier League and one being the Premier League and one being the Champions League.
“I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people would become part of my life,” Salah said in a video featuring highlights of his time with Liverpool posted on X.
“Liverpool is not just a football club. It’s a passion, it’s a history, it’s a spirit. I can’t explain in words to anyone not of this club. We celebrated victory, we won the most important trophies, and we fought together through the hardest time in our lives. I want to thank everyone who was part of this club throughout my time here, especially the teammates, past and present.”
“And to the fans, I don’t have enough words. The support you showed me through the best time of my career, and you stood by me in the toughest times. It’s something I will never forget and something I will take with me always.
“Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will always be one of you. This club will always be my home, to me and to my family and to me.”
Having been named the star player in the team that marched to a record-tying 20th English league title last season, Salah signed a two-year extension last April, binding him to the club until the end of the 2026-27 season. He has, however, fallen this season and has been relegated to three straight games towards the end of last year. Salah later delivered a combative interview to the press, claiming that the club was throwing him under the bus during the club’s dismal streak.
He also implied that he was not associated with the manager Arne Slot and inquired whether he would stay in the club until the January transfer window. He then failed to feature in the squad of a Champions League match against Inter Milan.
