Anna Maxwell Martin is one of Britain’s most respected television and stage actresses. She was born on May 10, 1977, in Beverley, East Yorkshire, England. Her parents were scientists, with her father running a pharmaceutical company and her mother working as a research scientist.
The actress first showed her passion for performing at Beverly High School, where she took part in many school plays. By age 11, Martin had already decided she wanted to become an actor. However, she first studied history at the University of Liverpool, focusing on the First World War, before switching to drama.

She won a second BAFTA in 2009 for Poppy Shakespeare.
Martin has appeared in numerous acclaimed UK productions, including Line of Duty, Motherland, Good Omens, Doctor Who, and Becoming Jane. In 2024, she played Delia Balmer in Until I Kill You and Leanne Fitz-Amobi in A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder. She also starred as Lucy Betts-Taylor in the BBC murder mystery Ludwig.
In 2025, Martin joined the cast of Star City, a spin-off of For All Mankind, playing Lyudmilla. The BBC drama Unforgivable, in which she appears, premiered on July 24, 2025. Martin is currently starring in The Constituent at London’s Old Vic Theatre.
Beyond acting, Martin serves as an ambassador for the Action for Children charity. In December 2025, she appeared in the charity’s Christmas short film Santaland, helping raise money for children living in poverty. Martin’s personal life has seen profound loss. She married director Roger Michell, known for Notting Hill, and they had two daughters together.
