Tony Awards 2026: ‘Schmigadoon!’ and ‘Death of a Salesman’ Lead Broadway’s Biggest Night

Schmigadoon!, Death of a Salesman, Ragtime and Liberation were among the largest winners at the 79th Tony Awards, which honoured the best of Broadway on Sunday night.

The event, which was broadcast from the Radio City Music Hall in New York, was hosted by singer Pink and recognised shows that achieved exceptional performances in the 2025–26 Broadway season, as well as marking a record-breaking year for Broadway’s attendance figures and revenue.

The musical based on Schmigadoon! won the coveted Best Musical award and received many other awards, such as Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations. The show, which was based on the popular TV comedy, was one of the most successful shows of the awards season and went on to become Broadway’s best new musical. 

In the play categories, Liberation went on to win Best Play, continuing its string of wins, while it was widely praised by critics. The production, written by Bess Wohl, was described as having a contemporary relevance and was a reflection on the women’s liberation movement.

The play revival categories were dominated by a revival of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. The production was also named Best Revival of a Play and picked up several other honours, such as Best Direction of a Play for Joe Mantello. The show also won several technical awards, and Laurie Metcalf was named Best Featured Actress in a Play

Joshua Henry, who appeared in Ragtime, was the Best Actor in a Musical, and his co-star Caissie Levy won Best Actress in a Musical. The much heralded revival of Ragtime also took the Best Revival of a Musical prize, making it one of the most celebrated productions of the season.

John Lithgow swept the play acting awards with Giant for Best Actor in a Play, marking him as the oldest actor to win Best Actor in a Play at age 80. Lesley Manville’s performance in Oedipus brought her a major success in her Broadway career, for which she earned Best Actress in a Play.

Other productions to compete for awards included Cats: The Jellicle Ball, which won awards for Best Direction of a Musical, Best Choreography and Best Costume Design of a Musical. The Lost Boys also had some success, picking up several design awards as well as acting awards for the cast. 

The ceremony showcased the nominated productions and tributes to classic Broadway shows, highlighting a season of record revenues and the ongoing strength of live theatre. The 2026 Tony Awards showcased the breadth and life of the best of Broadway, with big victories going to new creations and revivals.
